‘Saved By The Bell’ Reboot Canceled Despite Winning Outstanding Comedy Series
KEY POINTS
- Peacock has canceled “Saved By The Bell” after two seasons
- The streamer did not disclose viewership data to the public
- The reboot won Outstanding Comedy Series last month
Bayside High will close its doors again after “Saved By The Bell” failed to secure a Season 3 renewal.
Deadline exclusively reported Wednesday that the reboot would end its run after two seasons. Peacock informed the cast and crew of its decision the day prior.
The revival of the ‘90s teen sitcom was received well when it premiered in 2020, prompting the streaming service to drop a second season last November.
Peacock does not release viewership data, so there is no way to tell how the second season performed. But the show received mostly positive reviews from critics for addressing topics such as race, class, inclusion and education, among others.
The cancellation came as a shock considering that “Saved By The Bell” won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards in April. The Hollywood Reporter even lauded the series for being more “ambitious” than the original by tackling social issues.
The reboot was from writer and executive producer Tracey Wigfield. Franco Bario and Peter Engel also executive produced, while Universal Television produced the series.
“We are so proud to have been the home of the next iteration of ‘Saved by the Bell’ for both new and OG fans. ‘Saved by the Bell’ has been a cultural mainstay for more than 30 years and the new series, led by Tracey Wigfield’s superfan enthusiasm and signature witty humor, seamlessly continued the show’s legacy, all while allowing more audiences to feel seen,” Peacock was quoted by Variety as saying.
The streamer continued, “We’re grateful to Tracey, Franco Bario, our partners at UTV, the beloved cast, and the fans who have continued to champion one of the most iconic shows of all time.”
Original stars Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Mario Lopez returned for the revival as series regulars. Meanwhile, their former co-stars, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen and Lark Voorhies appeared in recurring roles.
The new main cast of “Saved By The Bell” included John Michael Higgins, Haskiri Velazquez, Dexter Darden, Mitchell Hoog, Josie Totah, Alycia Pascual-Peña and Belmont Cameli.
