  • Scarlett Johansson feels the timing of Black Widow's release is perfect
  • Johansson noted if the movie would have released five years ago, it would not have been "substantial"
  • The movie will hit theaters on May 1, 2020

Scarlett Johansson is all set to enthrall fans by donning the iconic costume of Black Widow once again in the upcoming movie of the same name. The movie will chronicle the journey of Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow and how she manages to stay alive while working as a freelance operative.

Marvel Studios faced a lot of backlash for not making a female-led superhero movie earlier even when Johansson’s character has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since “Iron Man 2” (2010).

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johansson addressed the issue and explained why this the perfect time to release the movie. The Academy Award-nominated actress quashed all the claims that the film should have been made earlier as the blockbuster success of films like “Captain Marvel” has made it possible for production companies to come out with stories of female superheroes.

The “Jojo Rabbit” star further added that if the movie would have released five or ten years back, it would not have been as “substantial” as it is now.

“For anyone who said to me, ‘Oh this film should have happened five or ten years ago,’ I am like it would not have been as substantial. The film is happening now as a result of what is going on in the zeitgeist, and I think it is pretty cool,” Johansson said.

Female-led superhero movies like “Wonder Woman” and “Captain Marvel” have been a great success at the box office.

“Captain Marvel” earned more than $1 billion globally and currently holds a score of 78% on review Rotten Tomatoes whereas DC’s “Wonder Woman” accumulated over $821 million worldwide and currently sits with 93% rating on RT.

Oscar-winner Brie Larson portrayed the role of “Captain Marvel” in the movie while Gal Gadot donned the legendary costume of “Wonder Woman.”

Later in the discussion, Johansson admitted that playing the comic-book character has changed her a lot and the movie beautifully highlights the decade-long efforts made by people to tell the story of Romanoff.

“This film is very much a result of this journey, my own personal journey. I feel that I probably wasn't as willing or able to go to the kind of uncomfortable, embarrassing, ugly places before,” Johansson said.

The trailers of the movie are being appreciated by many. The fans believe that it will be an emotional journey for them.

The cast also includes Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour in pivotal roles.

“Black Widow” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2020.
