School Board Head Removed For Allegedly Choking Colleague, Slamming Her Head On Table
KEY POINTS
- The attack happened during a finance subcommittee meeting
- Cops were informed about the incident, but they did not immediately make an arrest
- An emergency board meeting was held hours after the attack and the accused was removed from her position
The president of a school board in Michigan has been voted out of her position for allegedly slamming a colleague's head on a table and choking her during a meeting.
Danielle Green was removed from her position in an emergency meeting of the Flint Community Schools Board of Education on Wednesday night. Green allegedly ambushed the board's treasurer, Laura MacIntyre, who said the attack was brutal and unprovoked. The alleged attack happened during a finance subcommittee meeting Wednesday, The New York Post reported.
Superintendent Kevelin Jones said when the board members were arguing about building new schools, Green allegedly slammed MacIntyre's head into a desk, triggering a concussion. She also allegedly grabbed MacIntyre's throat and punched her several times, causing her to bleed.
"There was no fight. There was no argument. I was chairing a committee meeting and I was attacked, unprovoked," MacIntyre said at the emergency meeting, MLive-The Flint Journal reported. "There was no escalation, fight or attack previous to being attacked … I was brutally attacked and had to seek medical attention. I am only here to see that the truth comes out and justice is served."
Charis Lee, an attorney representing the board, said cops were alerted about the assault, but they did not arrest her immediately. MacIntyre filed a police complaint and told the board she will pursue charges to the full extent of the law.
Green and MacIntyre reportedly had arguments during public meetings even in the past. However, they never turned violent before.
Green was not part of Wednesday's emergency meeting. Joyce Ellis-McNeal, who served as vice president under Green, will be the new president.
Although the school board does not have the authority to completely remove a board member who was elected by parents, Green's position will automatically be void if she is convicted of a felony, Lee said.
"I want to assure families that we will remain focused on our mission to provide a high-quality education to our scholars. We remain committed to serving as a key support structure for our families who we are privileged to serve," Jones said in a statement.
