KEY POINTS

  • Megalodons spawn randomly or as part of quests
  • They can be taken down with enough cannon and gunfire
  • Harpoons will cause Megalodons to drag ships at incredible speeds

Megalodons are gigantic sharks that can sometimes be found stalking a ship in “Sea of Thieves.” With teeth larger than the average pirate, these enormous monsters can be quite the sight to behold, and an even bigger problem to deal with.

Daring crews can set out and actively hunt these monsters for a hefty haul of loot and bragging rights. However, Megalodons aren’t exactly easy to come by. Here’s how to find and hunt these giant sharks in “Sea of Thieves.”

How to find a Megalodon

The most straightforward way to find a Megalodon is by accepting the Shrouded Deep adventure in the tavern of any outpost. This quest will have players sail through the seas and collect the souls of four Megalodons, all of which can be summoned with special items in bespoke locations.

However, this adventure is limited-time only. The Shrouded Deep will only be available until May 12.

Outside of this quest, Megalodons can randomly spawn in open waters, away from islands, outposts, fortresses and the like.

How to fight a Megalodon

Since players have no choice but to fight Megalodons in the open seas, the only real weapons they can use are guns and cannons. Make sure to stock up on cannonballs, as the fight might take some time.

Megalodons attack by charging and biting at a ship’s hull. This is almost impossible to avoid, but it can be prevented by repeatedly shooting cannonballs at the shark’s mouth while it is charging. Deal enough damage, and it will go back to circling the ship.

Hitting the monster with cannons while it’s circling can be difficult. Using the pistol or sniper rifle may be a better option for dealing damage while in this phase.

Lastly, consider harpooning the Megalodon to make landing cannon shots easier. Take note that the shark will drag the ship around as it swims. This will put players at risk of going overboard, but only if they aren’t clinging to something on the deck like cannons, harpoon guns or other interactables.

If the ship gets bitten, send everyone to repair the lower decks. Megalodon bites inflict heavy damage and plenty of holes, which can sink the ship if not repaired immediately.
