Sean Penn's Wife Leila George Files For Divorce 1 Year After Zoom Wedding

Sean Penn and his wife, actress Leila George, are calling it quits after just over one year of marriage.

George, 29, filed for divorce from Penn, 61, Friday, with online records cited by TMZ showing she filed the dissolution in Los Angeles Superior Court. The reason for their split remains unclear.

Penn and George, who is the daughter of actor Vincent D'Onofrio, tied the knot in July 2020 during the height of the pandemic in an intimate wedding ceremony with only a few loved ones present to witness the event.

Rumors of their nuptials later began swirling after they were spotted wearing gold wedding bands. Their pals then started congratulated them on Instagram before Penn confirmed their secret wedding.

"We did a COVID wedding. By that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom and we were at the house, my two children and her brother. And we did it that way," Penn said on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," one month after they tied the knot.

The Oscar winner also gushed over George in a previous interview with News.com.au before the news of their wedding made headlines.

"I am madly in love with a wonderful, extraordinary Australian woman," he said while promoting the non-profit he founded, Community Organised Relief Effort (CORE). "She is the chief of staff for CORE and is currently setting up contract tracing in remote sites in immigrant communities."

Although they only wed last year, the pair had been romantically linked since 2016. One of George's pals told People in August that the two stars had an on-again, off-again relationship before they tied the knot.

"They got together and then they broke up, and Sean won her back," the unnamed friend told the outlet. "He realized he had made a mistake and when he felt he might lose her, he worked hard to get her back."

The source added that George and Penn self-isolated together during the pandemic, and it helped strengthen their bond. Both did their part in helping combat the pandemic by helping set up testing sites in Los Angeles.

"They got back together during COVID and became really close and got engaged a few months ago, early during quarantine," the tipster said.

George is Penn's third wife. He was previously married to Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010, and Madonna from 1985 to 1989. Penn also dated Charlize Theron, but they split in June 2015.
