Sebastian Stan is opening up about the nipple piercings he got for his role in Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” miniseries.

The 39-year-old actor portrayed Tommy Lee on the show, and he had to undergo a physical transformation to emulate the heavy metal musician. Part of the makeover was getting nipple piercings.

Though Stan appeared in the series with pierced nipples, it turns out that they weren’t real. The actor was made to wear prosthetics while filming, and he said doing so gave him an awkward experience on the set.

“You know it’s a strange sensation when a 45-year-old man is applying things to that area at 4 in the morning. So yeah, it took a minute,” Stan said when asked about the piercings during a Q&A with fans for IMDb.

The Marvel star went on to share that he had trouble keeping the prosthetics on because they “were not staying on.” This led to some issues when he and co-star Lily James recreated Pamela Anderson and Lee’s famous nipple-biting photo.

Aside from the piercings, Stan also had to don replicas of Lee’s tattoos “every few days” while they were filming the series. He said that at least two men had to apply the ink on his skin at the same time.

Stan said he got so used to having the skin art that he started viewing it as part of his costume. However, that meant staying in the makeup chair for a long time, according to Us Weekly.

It was not enough for the actor to look the part, he also had to learn to play drums to give justice to the Mötley Crüe rocker. He also studied Lee’s interviews and works.

“It’s not easy to do. My fingers were swollen for a good week and a half. I kept hitting myself in the head with it,” he told Variety of his struggle with playing the drums in January.

Meanwhile, Anderson was reportedly not pleased with the series since it took her back to a “very traumatic time” in her life by chronicling her relationship with Lee and bringing back their almost hour-long sex tape to the spotlight.

“After the tape was made public, it was a very traumatizing situation, and it's unfair that she is being re-subjected to this trauma, like re-opening a wound,” an insider told People earlier this week.

The anonymous tipster added, “Pamela deserves a level of respect. She's a human being and a mom. There's a sense of hypocrisy about it. It's her life and she should have the decision [as to] whether it's turned into a commodity for public consumption.”

“Pam & Tommy” is streaming on Hulu, with new episodes being released each week.
