Selena Gomez Gets Restraining Order Against Stalker: Death Threats Caused 'Extreme Fear'
Selena Gomez, of Justin Bieber and Disney fame, has been granted a temporary restraining order after a man with a history of mental illness, Thomas Brodniki, stalked the star and made her the target of several death threats.
Court records show Gomez, star of Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place and girlfriend of pop star Justin Bieber, was granted the order Oct. 13 in Burbank, Calif., just north of LA. Brodnicki must stay 100 yards away from Gomez and her workplace until his hearing on Nov. 4, when the order may be extended for up to three years.
Brodniki, 46, has a criminal history of stalking. According to Gomez and her lawyer, Blair Berk, Brodniki traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles to see the star, visiting her workplace at least three times. He told many people, including his therapist, that he planned to kill Gomez. He has had conversations with God in which he was thinking about killing me, Gomez told the judge.
During a mandatory mental evaluation, which the stalker was served after allegedly threatening to scratch people's eyes out on the street, TMZ reports that Brodniki made further threats against Gomez's life. [I live] in extreme fear, Gomez told the court last week.
The LAPD's Threat Management Unit has been involved in the stalker's case. According to court documents, LAPD detectives were alarmed by Brodnicki's history of mental illness and making criminal threats, though the LAPD did not say what Brodnicki had done in the past. The death threats, however, were taken extremely seriously, according to reports.
This is not the first time Gomez has been the target of death threats. After pictures were released of the singer and Justin Bieber vacationing in Hawaii in May, Bieber's fans, or Bieliebers, started a vicious hate campaign against her. Many posted on Twitter about their plans to kill Selenz Gomez. Bieber fan tweets included threats like I'm gonna kill ya in the night and the ominous Selena Gomez is dangerously close to a long, slow painful death.
This is the first time, however, that such serious charges have been filed in a Gomez stalking case.
