KEY POINTS

  • "Sex Education" Season  4 to start filming in July 2022
  • Season 4 could arrive on Netflix in the summer of 2023
  • Emma Mackey teased the future for Otis and Maeve

“Sex Education” fans are in for a long wait since the show won’t be returning with Season 4 until 2023.

Despite announcing the renewal of “Sex Education” for a fourth installment in September 2021, filming would not start until July 2022. This means the show’s return would likely fall in the summer of 2023, according to What’s On Netflix.

“Sex Education” Season 3 ended with major cliffhangers. Fans were left wondering what could be next for Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Adam (Connor Swindells) after their heartbreaking split, and if Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey) would find their way back to each other even if Maeve chose to pursue her education in the United States.

In an interview with Elle, Mackey, 26, teased her character’s possible future with Otis in Season 4.

“Oh, wow. I've just always seen it as—it’s a timing thing. Which often it is, isn't it? I think they're both quite good at communicating how they feel, Otis perhaps more so than Maeve. But really, they needed to grow up and figure s--t out for themselves,” Mackey said.

“Also, their whole world doesn't revolve around each other. They both have home lives. They're not satellites around each other. I think it's important to show that they have a whole rich life individually. If the time is right, it will happen, and I think that’s what we achieved this season,” she added.

When asked how she wanted to see her character evolve through the story, Mackey said she hopes Maeve would be more open and immerse in different cultures.

“I'm excited for her to make some new friends, to open up a bit more and be exposed to a different culture, to a different kind of world. Because she's only ever lived in her little, tiny bubbles. How is she out of that bubble?” she explained.

Fans shouldn’t worry for their favorite characters in this coming-of-age rom-com since all of the main cast members were confirmed to reprise their roles.

Meanwhile, “Sex Education” writer Krishna Istha posted a casting call on Twitter for two new characters late last year.

“Sex Education” is currently streaming on Netflix.

Sex Education
18. "Sex Education" Season 2 (Netflix) - The first season of “Sex Education” was so beautifully rendered that adults could have learned so much from it. But season 2 is much more than just educating people about “sex,” it is about self-awareness, compassion and love. The best thing about the second installment is that not a single moment is wasted in meaningless conversations. Every single character is developed and gets equal screen time. This season’s storyline is all about girls who shine the brightest in this endearing Netflix series.  Jon Hall/Netflix
