‘Shadowhunters’ Season 2 Spoilers: Harry Shum Jr. Opens Up About Playing Valentine
“Shadowhunters” Season 2, episode 12 saw cast member Harry Shum Jr. playing the villainous character Valentine after his character, Magnus, inhabited his body and vice versa.
While speaking with TV Line, the former “Glee” star admitted that it was quite difficult cracking Alan Van Sprang’s character. “He has a lot of nuances, all these little movements and smiles. I just tried to capture that without being too blatant or hokey about it, since Valentine is trying to hide those characteristics, trying to fool people as much as he can,” he said.

Meanwhile, Azazel (Brett Donahue) was the one who put Valentine in Magnus’ body. However, what the former didn’t realize was how difficult it was to fool someone Magnus has been intimate with, like his boyfriend Alec (Matthew Daddario). “Valentine doesn’t really know Magnus that well, other than him being a ‘filthy warlock,’ as he says. He knows he’s a little flamboyant, but he doesn’t know much about his personal life,” he said.
Towards the end of episode 12, Valentine in Magnus’ body ended up roaming the city freely, while Magnus in Valentine’s body was kept in the custody of the Shadowhunters. Shum, who shared some scenes with Van Sprang, said that it was very fun working with his co-star for a number of different reasons.
“I’ve never really gotten to act with Van Sprang before, so to do it this way for the first time – playing each other – made it even more interesting. He’s such a great actor, and it was so cool to see what he did with it, seeing how he lifted those little hand movements and other things I’ve contributed to the character,” he explained.
Elsewhere in “Shadowhunters” Season 2, episode 12, Clary (Katherine McNamara) finally learned that she is not biologically related to Jace (Dominic Sherwood). But the biggest twist came after it was revealed that Jace came from the Herondale bloodline. More specifically, he is related to Imogen, a.k.a. the Inquistor (Mimi Kuzyk).
“Shadowhunters” Season 2 airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
