'Shadowhunters' Season 4 Renewal Campaign Mocked By Freeform: 'Don't Count On It'
"Shadowhunters" Season 4 is still on the wishlist of many fans, but Freeform may have just shot down all of their hopes for a renewal.
On Saturday, Freeform aired "Toy Story" with "PopnKnowledge" inserts that would add trivia or poke fun at events or logic unfolding in the movie. This was part of the network's "25 Days of Christmas" programming event. However, in one scene of the movie, the cabler subtly took a jab at "Shadowhunters" and its fans who are pushing for a Season 4 renewal, according to TV Line.
In the scene, Woody consults a Magic 8-Ball. The pop-up pretended that the character asked, "Will Freeform save 'Shadowhunters' if I keep tweeting about it?" And the reply that came out was, "DON'T COUNT ON IT."
"Shadowhunters" fans, of course, were enraged by Freeform's mockery of their campaign. They began sharing screenshots of the scene via social media, insisting that this was not just a joke made during the East Coast airing. One fan even shared a video of Freeform's taunt on Twitter.
Freeform has yet to reply to fans' inquiry about their mean-spirited joke. A source at the cabler, however, told TV Line that the line in question appearing in the "Toy Story" broadcast had been a "mistake."
Freeform announced in June that "Shadowhunters" Season 3B would be the show's last run. Fans immediately took up arms and started the Save Our Show campaign on social media, hoping to convince the network heads to give "Shadowhunters" another try or another one to pick it up. While the initiative has not yet managed to fulfill its main goal, the campaign has done a lot of good nonetheless, raising over $30,000 for charities such as those that provide assistance for LGBTQ youth.
This type of campaign has worked before, like in the case of "Lucifer," which got picked up by Netflix, and "Timeless," which has a two-hour finale airing on Dec. 20. For now, "Shadowhunters" Season 3B, which premieres Feb. 25, will still be the last run of the series, but there is still hope for a renewal in the future.
