“Shazam!” is returning with a sequel. It is being reported that during Brazil’s CCXP event over the weekend, Warner Bros. shared the big news that Zachary Levi will be coming back as the DC Comics superhero for “Shazam 2.”

MovieWeb reports that the studio announced its plans for a followup to the hit film “Shazam!” but didn't offer any other information regarding production.

Levi first teased a sequel to the 2019 superhero film earlier this year. In June, he told the Associated Press that a script for a followup was already in the works. If what Levi previously said is true, fans can expect production on the new film to begin spring or summer 2020.

In April, it was reported by The Wrap that filmmaking team David F. Sanberg and Peter Safran would return to helm the sequel based on a script from screenwriter Henry Gayden.

After earning $364.6 million at the box office worldwide, it’s not surprising that the movie would get a sequel. Even critics and fans loved the iteration of the character with its light humor and chemistry between the lead actors. Currently, the film boasts a 90% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an equally positive 83% fresh audience rating on the site.

Even though "Shazam!" was a standalone movie, it did leave open the possibility for a sequel. At the end of the film, audiences were introduced to another villain from the DC Comics library known as Mister Mind. Shazam also turned his fellow foster siblings into adult-sized superheroes like him, so there are definitely some stories to be taken out from there. Not to mention, audiences were teased with Black Adam, despite his name not being mentioned. We did learn, however, that a movie based on the antihero is being made with Dwayne Johnson essaying the role. The Black Adam movie is set to begin shooting next year.

No official release date has been given for “Shazam 2” since the reported announcement.
