A sheriff's deputy turned himself in after allegedly shooting a married couple to death at their residence in Dublin, California, officials have said.

Devin Williams Jr., a 24-year-old member of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, was off-duty when he shot the man, 58, and his wife, 42, using his service weapon inside their home, Lt. Ray Kelly said Wednesday, according to ABC News.

Williams then fled the scene in a Volkswagen and was caught by highway patrol officers about 160 miles away, near the city of Coalinga.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene, the Dublin Police Department said in a news release.

During a news conference, authorities said Williams surrendered after a 45-minute phone conversation with Dublin Police Chief Garrett Holmes.

"Our agency is in shock," Kelly said, as per NBC News. "This is not something we deal with. This is not what we're about. We had no idea that this could happen."

Meanwhile, Holmes said it was "disheartening" that one of the department's officers was the "trigger person" behind the tragic incident.

Officials revealed that William recently went through "some significant things" in his life, implying that it may have triggered his actions.

"Somewhere in the last several months of his life, some significant events happened that led up to this moment. A lot of those events went undiscovered and disclosed," Kelly said, according to ABC News.

He further disclosed there was a "connectivity" between Williams and the two victims, who have not been identified.

There were six people inside the residence when the incident occurred. An out-of-town relative who was visiting the family at the time became a key eyewitness in the case, Kelly added.

Williams has been working with the department for a year. Kelly described him as a "remarkable young person," adding that he had no prior involvement in any disciplinary issues.

"How we got here today — it will be part of our investigation and something we'll be looking at as a law enforcement profession," Kelly said, as per NBC News.

Police are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting and the alleged relationship between the accused and the couple. They are also searching for the gun that William used and threw out of his car when he fled the scene.
