Shohei Ohtani Stats: MLB Star Making History With Strikeouts, Scoreless Innings Streak
One season after a historic MVP campaign, Shohei Ohtani is still putting up eye-popping stats. The Los Angeles’ Angels’ star is currently pitching better than anyone in baseball while also producing as a hitter.
Ohtani won his fifth straight start Wednesday night, allowing five base runners and striking out 10 batters in seven scoreless innings. In the 5-2 victory against the Miami Marlins, Ohtani became the only MLB player ever to officially record 10 strikeouts, two RBI and a stolen base in a single game.
Ohtani extended his streak to 28.2 innings pitched without giving up a run. The two-way star is the seventh pitcher in the last 50 seasons to have at least 40 strikeouts and no runs allowed in four straight starts.
During his five-start winning streak, Ohtani has twice as many innings pitched as hits allowed.
In his 2021 AL MVP campaign, most of Ohtani’s value came at the plate, where he hit 46 home runs with a .965 OPS. In 2022, Ohtani has been so dominant on the mound that he’s one of the top Cy Young candidates.
Ohtani’s 2.44 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 111 strikeouts all rank in the top five among American League pitchers. He’s on pace to make 28 starts while being included in the Angels’ lineup in nearly every game.
Ohtani has 18 home runs, and he’s tied for seventh in the AL with 53 RBI. His .495 slugging percentage is good for 11th in the league.
Despite putting up stats that have never been seen in MLB history, Ohtani is not favored to win a second straight MVP award. New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge is the frontrunner at the midway point of the year, leading a team that is on pace to set the single-season wins record.
The Angels are seven games under .500 and likely to miss the playoffs for an eighth straight season.
