KEY POINTS

  • Gunmen shot a California mother, 16, and her 10-month-old son in the head
  • One or more people stood over the two victims when the shooting occurred
  • Authorities are looking into whether or not the incident was gang violence

The people responsible for killing a California family earlier this week seemingly stood over one of the victims and her infant son when they opened fire on the duo, according to authorities.

Alissa Parraz, 16, and her 10-month-old son, Nycholas Parraz, were among the six killed in a shooting in the farming community of Goshen Monday, NBC News reported.

The two were fleeing the violence when the gunmen caught up to them outside their home.

They were then shot in the head in what police described as an "assassination-style" killing.

Forensics showed one or more people stood over Alissa and Nycholaz when they were killed, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux revealed Tuesday.

"None of this was by accident. It was deliberate, intentional and horrific," Boudreaux said of Monday's shooting, which also resulted in the deaths of Marcos Parraz, 19; Jennifer Analla, 49; Eladio Parraz, 52; and Rosa Parraz, 72.

Eladio was the uncle of the teenage victims, and Rosa was their grandmother, according to Tulare County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Teresa Douglass.

Meanwhile, Analla was in a relationship with another family member who was not killed.

Three people survived the shooting and will also be interviewed by authorities.

Boudreaux initially told reporters that the attack was likely a cartel hit, but he said investigators are also looking into whether it was gang violence.

"I am not eliminating that possibility. These people were clearly shot in the head, and they were also shot in places where the shooter would know that a quick death would occur... This is also similar to high-ranking gang affiliation and the style of executions that they commit," the sheriff said.

"I know for a fact this 10-month-old baby was relying on the comfort of his mother. There was no reason for them to shoot that baby, but they did," he added.

Two people were responsible for the shooting, authorities believe. Neither has been identified or apprehended, and Boudreaux was unable to provide a possible description.

Authorities are searching for the suspects, and they have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to their arrests, the Associated Press reported.

Law enforcement was familiar with the affected family over gang activity that "has routinely occurred in the past," according to Boudreaux, who did not give any specifics.

Not everyone who was shot Monday was a drug dealer or gang member, the sheriff noted.

Among the victims believed to be innocent were Alissa, her baby and Rosa, Boudreaux said.
