Coronaviruses are forms of viruses that usually affect the respiratory tract. The virus has been linked to severe acute respiratory syndrome or SARS, as well as pneumonia and the common cold.

Early this month, Chinese authorities have warned of a new strain of coronavirus affecting people in some parts of China. It has since spread throughout the country and in other parts of Asia.

On Tuesday this week, Chinese health officials have confirmed four persons infected with the virus have already died. To date, there are over 200 cases of coronavirus infections that have been confirmed. Health officials in nations like South Korea, Japan, and Thailand have confirmed cases of such infections in their own countries.

The severity of infection may vary and can range from mild to moderate respiratory tract illness. The sufferer may show symptoms similar to that of lower-respiratory tract illnesses like bronchitis or pneumonia and the common cold.

For older adults, infants, and those with weak immune systems; however, coronavirus infection may be deadly for them. Since the outcome of treatment largely depends on the time of discovery, identifying its symptoms at an early time is vital. There are six signs you need to be on the lookout for.

Symptoms of Coronavirus

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC has stated coronaviruses in humans will only last for a limited amount of time. Its symptoms may include a general feeling of being unwell, sore throat, fever, runny nose, cough, and headache.

The health institute also revealed two human coronaviruses strains are often known to cause severe symptoms. These are the SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV.

The CDC revealed that symptoms of SARS usually include body aches, fever, and chills. These symptoms have been known to progress to pneumonia. The health institute added that there were no recorded cases of SARS since 2004.

On the part of MERS, the CDC said its symptoms oftentimes include shortness of breath and cough, which usually progresses to pneumonia. Fever is also among its symptoms. According to the health institute, their data shows MERS can claim three or four of every ten patients infected by it.

Cases of MERS continue to be reported, mainly in the Arabian Peninsula.

The new strain of coronavirus is believed to have come from a seafood market in Wuhan in Central China. According to Zhong Nanshan, the head of the Chinese government expert team, two people living in Guangdong province south of China have contracted the disease from family members.
