Slender Man Stabbing Case Update: Wisconsin Teen To Plead Guilty
One of the two Wisconsin girls who was charged with stabbing a classmate to impress the fictional character Slender Man will plead guilty in a deal to save prison time. Morgan Geyser's attorney said she would receive treatment in a mental health facility, CNN reported.
As part of the deal, 15-year-old Geyser will be checked by a doctor and report to a judge, who will then decide how much time she will spend in the mental hospital. The hearing for Geyser’s plea deal has been set for Thursday, Oct. 5. Her attorney, Donna Kuchler, thanked the court after the hearing.
“It’s been a tragic experience for everyone. Our hearts go out to the victim and her family. And we’re very grateful that the district attorney’s office gave this case the considering it deserves,” she said, according to a Fox6Now report.
Her accomplice, Anissa Weier, also 15, was sentenced Sept. 15 to 3 years in a mental hospital, after the jury determined she was mentally ill at the time she and Geyser attacked their classmate, Payton Leutner. Leutner was stabbed 19 times, following which she died.
During a hearing in August, Weier said stabbing Leutner was Geyser’s idea and it was never her intention to kill her classmate. She also said during her hearing she participated because she was afraid of something happening to her or her family.
“I believed that if I didn’t go through with it, Slender Man would come and attack and kill myself, my friends and my family. Those I cared about the most,” she said at the time.
Slender Man has a large fan base in online forums, where he originated as a fake supernatural image. Expanding the character's story-line, some websites claim the fictional character has been around for centuries, tying a modern meme with traditional mythology, folklore, and legend. The character is tall and slender, and stalks his victims at night.
According to CNN, Slender Man first appeared in 2009 in an online forum. HBO also released a documentary about the character in January, called “Beware the Slenderman,” which tells the story of Geyser and Weier.
The three girls that were involved in this case were only 12-years-old when the incident occurred in 2014. Leutner was led into the woods where she was stabbed multiple times by Geyser while Weier encouraged her. The two girls were charged with attempted murder with intentional homicide, a crime that usually carries up to 65 years in prison.
