KEY POINTS

  • "SNL" recently announced that Kieran Culkin will host and Ed Sheeran will appear as musical guest on Nov. 6
  • Sheeran announced on Instagram Sunday that he tested positive for COVID-19
  • The "SNL" production is reportedly looking for a replacement performer who "appeals to the same demo"

"Saturday Night Live" is looking for a new musical guest for an upcoming episode following Ed Sheeran's COVID-19 diagnosis, according to a report.

The "Shape of You" singer announced Sunday that he tested positive for the coronavirus. Sheeran was scheduled to appear as the musical guest in the Nov. 6 episode, so producers of the NBC sketch comedy show are now "scrambling" to find a replacement, Page Six reported, citing unnamed sources.

Sheeran would not be allowed to enter the U.S. with a positive COVID-19 test, so the show is looking for "another singer who appeals to the same demo," a source told the outlet.

The tipster also said that "SNL" might allow Sheeran to perform remotely, but that is something that has yet to be decided.

"Ed is offering to perform live via video link, but this isn’t something ‘SNL’ does," the source said, before adding, "The show likes to have the performer in the studio."

Sheeran did not immediately respond to a request for comment when the outlet reached out to him.

On Sunday, Sheeran informed fans that he has contracted COVID-19 in a statement issued via Instagram.

"Hey, guys. [A] quick note to tell you that I’ve sadly tested positive for Covid, so I’m now self-isolating and following government guidelines," he wrote.

He continued, "I’m now unable to plough ahead with any in-person commitments for now, so I’ll be doing as many of my planned interviews/performances [as] I can from my house. Apologies to anyone I’ve let down. Be safe everyone."

Sheeran's fans showered him with love and support in the comments section, with many sending him their good wishes and prayers and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Sheeran's supposed appearance on "SNL" would have been his third. He also appeared on the NBC late-night show in 2014 and 2017, Deadline reported.

Meanwhile, "Succession" star Kieran Culkin will be making his hosting debut on the show on Nov. 6. He had a small role on the show back in 1991 in three sketches when his brother, Macaulay Culkin, hosted in Season 17.

Despite Sheeran's COVID-19 diagnosis and still uncertain appearance on "Saturday Night Live," his fans still have something to look forward to. According to Page Six, Sheeran's fourth studio album "=," pronounced "Equals," will still be released on Friday.
