Is ‘SNL’ On Tonight? NBC’s April 2 Schedule
“Saturday Night Live” will finally return from its brief hiatus tonight. “SNL” Season 47 will have an all-new episode on April 2 with a first-time host and musical guest.
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael is set to host the NBC comedy sketch show. Viewers may recognize the actor from the NBC sitcom “The Carmichael Show,” which was loosely based on his life.
Carmichael’s debut on “SNL” will come after the Friday night release of his HBO Max special “Rothaniel.” In the new comedy special, Carmichael, 34, touched on various topics, including coming out as gay.
During the special, which was filmed at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York, Carmichael spoke to the crowd about how learning his father cheated on his mother affected him.
“After that was out in the open,” he said, “I was left alone feeling like a liar because I had a secret. One that I kept from my father, my mother, my family, my friends, and you. Professionally, personally. And the secret is that I’m gay.”
Following his confession, the audience applauded Carmichael. “I’m accepting the love, I really appreciate the love. My ego wants to rebel against it,” he said.
Carmichael admitted he struggled with revealing his sexuality to others and feared facing certain consequences.
“I rebelled against it my whole life. I thought I’d never, ever come out,” he explained. “At many points, I thought, I’d rather die than confront the truth of that, to actually say it to people. Because I know it changes some people’s perceptions of me. I can’t control that.”
The North Carolina native admitted that his decision to come out put a strain on his relationship with his mother, but he remained optimistic about the future.
When the NBC variety sketch show airs, Carmichael will be joined by rapper Gunna, who will also make his “SNL” debut. The artist will perform songs from his third album, “DS4Ever,” which was released in January and snagged the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
“Saturday Night Live” airs tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
