  • Luke Shaw made the comment ahead of Man Utd's Boxing Day match
  • Man Utd defeated Newcastle 4-1
  • While Man Utd are currently placed seventh, Liverpool are on the top

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has insisted that the Red Devils are not very far away from the Premier League leaders, Liverpool FC.

With seven wins, five loses and seven draws, Man Utd are currently placed seventh on the Premier League points table, while Liverpool are atop with a mind-boggling 52 points and the Reds still have a game in hand. Liverpool are yet to lose a match in the league and have secured only one draw, which coincidentally came against Man Utd at Old Trafford.

Ahead of the Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle, Man Utd star defender Shaw said in an interview that his side is not far off Liverpool and reigning champions, Manchester City, while he also added that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be looking to strengthening the squad at the January transfer window.

In a report on the club’s official website, Shaw said, "I feel that the squad we have is no different from the squads that are challenging for the title. We’ve got such amazing players and some amazing young players who are still learning. Of course, we’re all still learning and all still wanting to improve. Everyone at this club wants the best thing for this club and even more so from the management side.”

“We’ve got great coaches and a great manager who knows this club inside out. He knows he needs to bring the good old days back that he once had under Sir Alex. I’ve got full confidence in this squad and in the manager. I’m sure he’ll be bringing in a few new players that can add to the strength of this team and take us back to the good old days of winning trophies,” Shaw added.

Man Utd went 0-1 down against Newcastle in their Boxing Day fixture Thursday at home after midfielder Matty Longstaff netted the opening goal at the 17th minute. However, the Red Devils fought back as three goals from Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford respectively left the scoreline 3-1 half-time. Soon after the play resumed following the break, Martial scored Man Utd’s fourth goal of the day.

Later in the day, Liverpool also won their Boxing Day match as they thrashed Leicester City 4-0 and will be next up against Wolves on Sunday.

Courtesy to their 4-1 win against Newcastle, Man Utd jumped to the seventh slot and will next lock horns against Burnley in the Premier League. It is an away fixture for the former champions that is also scheduled for Sunday.
