  • Wan-Bissaka has entered his third season at Man Utd
  • Man Utd are looking to have at least two options for every position
  • Solskjaer wants to strengthen his defense in January

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly planning to challenge Aaron Wan-Bissaka by signing another right-back during the January transfer window.

Wan-Bissaka has had a mediocre start to the 2021-22 campaign. Solskjaer wants to bring in more competition for the Englishman instead of replacing him, reported soccer media outlet 90Min. The Manchester United boss, who is yet to win a trophy with the club as manager, is looking to have at least two solid options for every position.

The Red Devils were in the summer market for a full-back and a defensive central midfielder. However, after signing Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United did not push through a move.

Wan-Bissaka recently received a two-game suspension from UEFA in the Champions League after his tackle on Swiss club Young Boys' Christopher Martins Pereira. In an interview with Man Utd's official website, Solskjaer confirmed that the club will appeal against Wan-Bissaka's suspension.

Due to the two-day ban, Wan-Bissaka missed the Red Devils' latest Champions League match against Villarreal, which the hosts won after Ronaldo's extra-time winner.

The English right-back rose through Crystal Palace's youth set up and made his senior debut with the Selhurst Park's side in 2017-18. Following two seasons at Crystal Palace, Wan-Bissaka was signed by Manchester United for a reported fee of $61 million. The English defender, who is into his third season at Old Trafford, has made over 100 competitive appearances for the Red Devils.

During the summer market, Solskjaer had eyes on Atletico Madrid's right-back Kieran Trippier to bolster the right-hand side of his squad. Despite the defender expressing his desire to move to Old Trafford, the La Liga side refused to reduce their asking price of around $41 million for the 31-year-old right-back.

Manchester United's scouts have been asked to look beyond Trippier should the Red Devils decide to sign a right-back in the winter market. Rangers captain James Tavernier and his teenage teammate Nathan Patterson are on the Red Devils' target list. Both the players had a role to play in Steven Gerrard's title-winning season.

Even though Tavernier and Patterson are on Manchester United's radar, the club is still keeping tabs on Trippier's situation, according to soccer website Teamtalk.
