'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' Director Talks About Upcoming Knuckles TV Series
Director Jeff Fowler teased fans about the upcoming spin-off series based on the "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" character Knuckles the Echidna. He even discussed story possibilities as well as how thrilling the project would be.
"Oh, it's very early with all of that [the Knuckles series]. One thing I knew after we finished the film, people are going to love this character," he said in an interview with Discussing Film on Monday. "They're going to love Idris [Elba] playing this character and they're going to want more of Knuckles absolutely."
Fowler went on to explain that he's now focused on making people love this character in the sequel, which premiered last week. Once he succeeds, he can begin working on the spin-off.
"He's such a wonderful character that there are so many different ways that you can go [in the series] that fans could really get excited by, so that will hopefully all come along very soon," he said. "But for now, I'm just so excited to get people to see the sequel."
Knuckles began as Sonic's enemy, on Dr. Robotnik's side, according to Screen Rant. However, he eventually learned about his mistakes and joined Sonic and his friend, Tails. Together, they beat the villain in a fight. The three then committed to becoming the new guardians of the Emerald.
Paramount+ announced via Twitter on Feb. 16 that the third installment of the movie was already underway. The studio also disclosed that a series based on Knuckle's character would soon be available on the streaming platform.
The first installment of the franchise, "Sonic the Hedgehog," was released in June 2020. The flick was an adaptation of the video game series of the same title. Sega, a video game company, was one of the developers of the game.
Ben Schwartz lent his voice to Sonic's character while Colleen O'Shanussy voiced Tails' character in the movie. Meanwhile, the second installment also featured the voices of James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Lee Majdoub.
The official trailer of the movie was released in December 2021.
Last month, Fowler revealed the plan to create a Sonic Cinematic Universe based on video games. However, he clarified that it would not follow the sequence of events in the games.
"It's not always going to be a linear progression of like 'Oh, this was in Sonic 2 so it's going to be in the Sonic 2 film'. It's going to be a little bit of a cherry-picking, a little bit of a melting pot," he said at the time.
