- The first film turned out to be a success and earned more than $306 million globally
After receiving positive reviews for the first “Sonic The Hedgehog” movie, Paramount Pictures is already working on the sequel to the highly successful film.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio and Sega Sammy are coming together to churn out more stories out of the “Sonic” world. Jeff Fowler, who directed the original movie, will be donning the director’s hat once again while Josh Miller and Pat Casey will be penning the story.
“Sonic The Hedgehog” was Fowler’s first feature film as a director. He previously helmed a short movie called “Gopher Broke” that got nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Animated Short Film category.
As soon as the news of a sequel surfaced online, Fowler took to Twitter and shared his excitement for the second installment. “ROUND TWO WITH THE BLUE!!” Fowler wrote.
The news of a second installment comes a month after Fowler revealed in an interview that there have been no talks about the sequel with the studio.
“If we are fortunate enough to do another movie, that we can finally get [Sonic and Tails] together and have some real fun, and really get to some of what is the next level of what people love about this world and these characters,” Fowler said at the time.
The first movie chronicled the journey of Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz), a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds and curl into a ball to attack enemies, helping police officer named Tom Wachowski(James Marsden) to prevent the evil Doctor Eggman (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his powers for world domination.
The video game adaptation created history by earning a total of $58 million during its first weekend and edged out last year’s “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” to become the biggest debut for a movie based on a video game. “Detective Pikachu” earned $54.3 million domestically during its opening weekend.
The project dominated the North American box office and earned more than $146 million during its run, making it the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America. The numbers could go even higher because the movie has still not been released in big international markets like China and Japan. The ongoing pandemic forced the makers to postpone the release of the film.
The film, with earnings of $306 million worldwide, is also the second highest-grossing movie of 2020.
“Sonic The Hedgehog” currently has a score of 64% on review site Rotten Tomatoes.
