Sony Announces PlayLink App For Smartphones That Supports Multiplayer Games On The PS4
Sony has announced the new PlayLink app for the PlayStation 4. PlayLink is an Android and iOS app that lets players control games using their smartphone or tablet.
“PlayLink titles are designed to be played in a group setting, allowing for a truly fun and dynamic experience. The collection of PlayLink games vary from gritty crime thrillers to quick-fire quizzes,” Sony said on its blog. “If you have a smartphone or tablet with the free companion app installed and your PS4 hooked up to a TV, you’re already set.”
Users will simply have to download the free PlayLink app from the App Store or the Google Play Store. The app will sync with the PlayStation 4 and will turn the smartphone or tablet into a controller, according to MacRumors.
Sony has announced new games for the PlayStation 4 that support the new PlayLink app. The first game that support PlayLink is “That’s You!,” which will be available to PlayStation Plus members for free on July 4.
“That’s You!” appears to support up to five players where each will have to answer questions about each other. “Set off on a journey of discovery with up to five of your friends and family, and find out what you really think about each other,” the game’s description reads.
To show off the game, Sony published a gameplay video for “That’s You!” featuring president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, Wish Studios’ Tom Bennett, Sony XDev members Pete Smith and Clair Bromley and SIE Japan’s Nic Doucet.
“PlayLink games turn your smartphone or tablet into a versatile controller – you can swipe, pinch, drag, tilt, rotate or even snap selfies and draw crafty doodles, depending on the game,” Sony said. “No matter which title you choose from our PlayLink collection, it’s guaranteed to be a slick pick-up-and-play experience.”
The next is “Hidden Agenda,” a crime thriller from Supermassive Games, the same developers behind 2015’s “Until Dawn.”
In “Hidden Agenda,” a group of players will be able to influence the how the story unfolds by voting on what decisions to make within the game. Players on the PlayLink app are also given secret information and objectives that they have to accomplish. This lets PlayLink players either help the main player through the game, or completely sabotage the story depending on their own set of objectives.
Another game that supports Sony’s playLink app is called “Knowledge is Power.” The game pits five players against each other in a gameshow style game where players will have to answer trivia questions. “This game is al about speed and accuracy in the face of some wickedly crafted distractions from your opponents,” Sony said.
The fourth PlayLink-supported title is called “Frantics,” an arcade-style game that features mini-games. “Frantics” supports up to three players, which will then have to face off in “a variety of challenges.” The game’s description also suggests that players will be able to negotiate, cooperate and bluff their way to victory.
Lastly, there’s the new entry to the “SingStar” series called “SingStar Celebration.” The game supports up to eight players, who will have to go head-to-head in a singing competition. Although the game can be played using the PlayLink app, it can still be played using the old SingStar Mic app. “Use your SingStar mic or combine your smartphone with the SingStar Mic App, and get ready for your big moment,” Sony said.
