Sony Celebrates 500 Million PlayStation Units Sold With Limited Edition PS4 Pro
Sony has announced that it will be releasing a limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro that features a translucent design. The limited edition console is being released by Sony to celebrate the milestone of selling more than 500 million PlayStation consoles worldwide.
“Today, I’m thrilled to reveal that Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially sold more than 525.3 Million PlayStation systems worldwide,” PlayStation worldwide marketing for Sony Interactive Entertainment Eric Lempel said on the PlayStation Blog. “With 500 Million PlayStation systems sold, that means countless adventures into the unknown, courageous stands against evil, and life-long memories of playing with family and friends. Thank you to all our fans for your passionate support over the past 24 years, which made all of this possible.”
As a way to thank its fans, Sony is releasing a limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro console that will only sell 50,000 units worldwide. This version of the PS4 Pro comes with a dark blue translucent shell. The DualShock 4 controller that comes with it also features the same design. This version of the PS4 Pro will also ship with the PlayStation Camera, the vertical stand and a mono headset. The console also has 2TB of internal storage.
Each limited edition PS4 Pro will also feature a commemorative copper plate up front, along with its limited edition serial number. Sony is also asking fans to keep an eye out for “extra special” units that feature serial numbers that signify important events in PlayStation history. Fans should look for these serial numbers: 09995 (the U.S. launch date of the original PlayStation), 01115 (the U.S. launch date of the PS4) and 01013 (the U.S. launch date of the PS VR).
Sony says that the 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro will be available from retailer websites starting on Aug. 24 for $499.99.
For gamers who aren’t interested in getting the limited edition console, Sony will also be selling the 500 Million Limited Edition DualShock 4 controllers as a standalone product for $64.99. There’s also a limited edition Gold Wireless Headset that features the same translucent design that will be sold for $99.99. These standalone items will be available to purchase sometime in early September, according to IGN.
“In the world of PlayStation, the possibilities of play are endless and we’d like to once again thank you for the tremendous love and support that has made PlayStation the best place to play since 1994,” Lempel said. “Here’s to 500 million more epic moments and experiences ahead!”
