Sony Files PlayStation Patent To Help Struggling Players Find Appropriate Gameplay Difficulty
KEY POINTS
- Sony patented an AI technology that would help assess the right difficulty level for PlayStation gamers
- The patent may not go beyond the conceptual stage
- The technology could be implemented through New Game Plus if it makes it to consoles
Sony is aware that PlayStation gamers come in different shapes, sizes and skill levels, and some may find beating foes more difficult compared to others. However, a new technology Sony recently patented may be the solution when it comes to poor players improving their skills.
The new PlayStation patent is called "Use of Machine Learning to Increase or Decrease Level of Difficulty in Beating Video Games Opponent." It describes an AI technology that can determine a player’s skill and either increase or decrease the level of difficulty to suit the one behind the controller.
For some, Sony's new patent may not be that exciting – particularly for those who are already good at playing PS4 or PS5 games or have no problem building up their skills on their own. Some would argue that the best way to go is the manual method of starting at the easiest level and working one's way up to more difficult ones. But others who may just be playing games to relax or who are completely new to games may find this helpful.
So how does this new technology work?
SVG noted that the AI technology will collect data on player patterns as well as their strategies. Combined with other relevant data gathered such as success rate and skill, the AI will try to come up with the optimal way for a player to get through a level or stage.
The patent also suggested that the AI could alter the "level of difficulty in prevailing against the boss" based on "successful and/or unsuccessful methods or tactics" previously used by a player.
"The methods or tactics may include, as examples, particular attacks such as a flying punch, a low kick, etc," the patent said. "Certain attack patterns or sequences may also establish the methods/tactics, as well as certain player movements and location changes within the level or fighting environment in which the player tends to remain while fighting the boss/opponent."
This new technology should be interesting for people who struggle with video games and are prone to giving up and moving on. While the concept makes sense, it will be interesting to see if it will be effective in gluing people to their seats and helping them enjoy video games.
This patent filing from Sony is tailored for its PlayStation game consoles. However, it would be best to note that not all of the company's patents go beyond the conceptual stage, so there is a chance this AI technology may not make it to future consoles.
But assuming it does, it could be implemented through New Game Plus, a feature tied to many of its games. But this should be taken with a grain of salt for now.
For now, gamers can continue picking the proper level that they believe they can handle.
