Sony Introduces FE 50mm F1.2 G-Master, Full Frame Compact Prime To Compete With Canon, Nikon
KEY POINTS
- Sony’s latest comes with innovations ideal for day-to-day photography and sudden bursts
- The new lens also features an 11-blade circular aperture to add extra bokeh refinement
- Sony has also honed its molding techniques to make sure that the output remains of high quality
Combining a compact lightweight design with a wide-open aperture, Sony has introduced its 60th E-mount lens FE 50mm F1.2 GM, which is all about versatility.
External Features
The front part of the lens is protected with anti-smudge fluorine and coated with Nano AR anti-reflective finish that also subdues flare and ghosting. Like other Sony cameras, it is protected from dust splashes and moisture because it is made of a polycarbonate lens barrel, Gizmodo reported.
The FE 50mm F1.2 GM comes in handy at 778 grams or 27.5 ounces. It has a wider barrel than FE 50mm F1.4 ZA and is almost similar in size to F1.4 prime.
Features And Innovations
Sony’s latest technology comes with G-Master resolution and bokeh at F1.2 that makes the subject stand out. It also features an 11-blade circular aperture to add extra bokeh refinement.
The FE 50mm F1.2 GM is good for snapshot portraits and day-to-day photography as it can sharpen edges and reduce optical aberrations. It also features corner to corner constant resolution set to compete with Nikon, Canon and Leica full-frame lenses.
It comes with ultra-curved pieces of glasswork to sharpen edges and reduce optical aberrations with its three extreme aspheric (XA) lens elements in the optical formula.
Sony understands that aspheric elements can cause an onion ring effect in defocused highlights so it worked on molding techniques to make sure that the output remains of high quality.
The lens can focus to about 15.8 inches at a 1:5.8 macros rating. The fast tenacious AF even at F1.2 is ideal for capturing high-speed bursts and is also reliable for slow motions, AF in low light, PCMag reported.
It has the capability to track moving subjects at F1.2 fast because it comes with four XD linear motors driving two floating focus mechanisms. It also comes with an aperture lens with switchable click stops.
Competition With Nikon, Canon, Leica Full Frame Lenses
In an interview back in 2018, Stephan Schulz, Leica’s head of professional products said that Sony never designed the E-mount for full-frame. Sony disproved the statement in 2019 as it unveiled its plan to release an E-mount full-frame lens, PetaPixel reported.
The FE 50mm F1.2 GM will roll out at $1,999.99 in the US and $2, 5999.99 in Canada on May 13.
