A new “Bewitched” movie is in the works at Sony. The announcement of the project comes about 16 years since the first big screen adaptation starring Nicole Kidman was released.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday that Sony has ordered for the development of a new movie version of the classic 1960s “Bewitched” TV series. Based on the exclusive information obtained by the media outlet, the project’s script is going to be penned by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.

Davis Entertainment is reportedly producing the new movie adaptation via John Davis and John Fox, who are notably known for “Dolemite Is My Name” and “Game Night.” No other information on the project including its cast was disclosed.

The original “Bewitched” series starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha alongside Dick York playing Darrin. York was later replaced by Dick Sargent. Samantha is a witch who marries Darrin, a mortal being, and so she tries so hard to live a typical suburban life on the show.

The classic sitcom ran for eight seasons from 1964 to 1972 on ABC. The show proved to be successful as it secured high ratings throughout its run.

In 2005, Sony released the first film adaptation of the sitcom. Kidman played Samantha in it while Will Ferrell portrayed Darrin. It was helmed by writer-director Nora Ephron, according to Variety.

There have been attempts at reviving the show for the modern audience. Sony previously planned to launch a series remake at CBS in 2011-12. It also intended to come up with a reboot at NBC in 2014. Since both did not move forward, the studio that owns the rights to the sitcom is putting it back on the big screen.

“Bewitched” the series remains to be well-loved by many viewers that it has become a hallmark of the sitcom genre. It even inspired Marvel’s Disney Plus offering “WandaVision” that stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, among others.

Apart from the new movie adaptation, Matalas is currently busy as he co-runs “Star Trek: Picard.” Furthermore, he and Fickett are developing the “Witch Mountain” remake for Disney Plus. The duo previously created and ran Syfy Channel’s TV adaptation of “Twelve Monkeys.”
