Soul Surfer's Son Finds Out About His Mother's Accident From Cousins
Professional surfer Bethany Hamilton had zero intentions of telling her four-year-old son, she had a shark attack incident long before he was born, but word travels fast.
Currently, a mother of two young boys, Bethany, made headlines all over the world after losing an arm in a shark attack at the age of 13.
She did her best to keep the gory details away from her son until he got older, but the information got out courtesy of his cousins.
Her accident happened in October 2003 while she was trying to get the perfect wave. A 14-foot tiger shark attacked her and severed the arm below the shoulder.
The Hawaiian native had a few misgivings about showing her son, the film, Soul Surfer which chronicled the attack and her recovery after that. It was based on her autobiography.
She said she might show Tobias when he got older, but it would have to happen organically as she would not go out of her way to show it to him.
When asked about the arm and how she related with her son, she claimed she never really explained it to the boy. He must have gotten curious, and that is when he got the information from relatives.
Hamilton attributed her reasons for not telling the children about the accident to protective causes as it would have made them fearful of the water.
She wants them to grow up without phobias, especially if she had a hand in causing them.
Her other 16 month-old toddler, Wesley, is also being acquainted with the water despite slight reluctance from the baby.
She maintains she is not pushing the children to pro-surfing, but would like them to have passions of their own. If that entails surfing, then it would be great for everyone.
The 29-year-old regularly brings the two boys to the beach to swim and surf.
Hamilton added Tobias is already adept in the water and can catch his waves. Apparently, he takes to the ocean. If he were to suddenly develop a fear of the water about something he does not fully understand, it would be such a shame.
The Amazing Race alum also hopes her documentary inspires viewers to find a way through their struggles.
Hamilton says her life has emulated a lot of unstoppable tones, and she hopes people are going to be inspired in their journey to overcome things. She also hopes people find passions that keep them going.
