A South Carolina police officer was stabbed after answering his door on Monday morning. The suspect in the incident has been identified as Forrest Bowman.

Bonneau Police Chief Franco Fuda was at his home when he heard a knock at the door, WCIV reported. When the officer stepped outside to meet the suspect, Bowman told Fuda he was “going to die today” and stabbed him below the eye with an ice pick.

Fuda dialed 911 and was taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment. WSPA reported that the State Law Enforcement Division joined the investigation and was able to track Bowman to his mobile home.

A two-hour standoff then ensued in which authorities attempted to negotiate with Bowman. A SWAT team was deployed and a robot was sent in to interact with the suspect.

officials used a tear gas bomb to apprehend Bowman and take him into custody, WCSC reported.

Bowman, who has an arrest record, now faces charges for assaulting a police officer.

Officials have yet to identify a solid motive for Bowman’s attack on Fuda. However, court records state that Bowman is out on bond after he threatened the chief two years ago.

“People have a bad opinion about Chief Fuda but I’m telling you he’s a wonderful man,” Debbie Hood, who knows Bowman, told the outlet.

“He would do anything he can do to help you. And I thank the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department for handling it as well as they did.”
