South Korean Girl Group Red Velvet Returns With New Album After Hiatus
Red Velvet, one of Korean pop music’s most sought-after girl groups is all set to make an official comeback on Aug. 16 with a new album, after nearly two years of hiatus.
The five-member girl group is slated to release their upcoming album “Queendom” next week.
The group teased this announcement on Aug. 2 in a Twitter post.
The teaser post was accompanied by a shiny logo of “Queendom,” the sixth mini-album of the group.
Fans immediately took to Twitter to celebrate the girl group’s comeback.
“Red Velvet always makes my day happy and complete. August 16 guys save the date! #RedVelvet #Queendom,” one fan commented.
“Please. Irene leaning against the crook of Seulgi’s neck then Joy lowering herself so she’s the same height as Irene then Yeri nearly covering Wendy PLEASE I missed my girls so much. I really really LOVE Red Velvet and I’m so happy that they’re back,” another fan said.
The release of “Queendom” comes after the group’s celebration of its seventh-year anniversary in the music industry on Aug. 1, according to Koreaboo.
To commemorate their 2014 debut, Red Velvet held a live broadcast via South Korean streaming app, Naver V, wherein members recounted their experiences since their debut.
“I was a trainee for seven years. Back then, time moved slowly, but it passes by so quickly now. It’s a new feeling, because time passed faster than I could have ever imagined.” She added with a laugh, “I’ve been at this company for 14 years,” Kang Seulgi, more popularly known as Seulgi, said in the broadcast as cited by Soompi.
Kim Yeri or Yeri, the group’s youngest member also noted how time quickly flew since she started performing with the group.
“I debuted at 17 years old, and now I’m 23. I can’t believe it. I think the people around me can’t believe it either. This always felt like such an age that was so far away, so it feels very new.”
Red Velvet released its last album, “The ReVe Festival” Finale” and title track, “Psycho” in December 2019. Since then, the group went on a break when one of its members, Shon Seung Wan, also known as Wendy, sustained an injury during a rehearsal ahead of their appearance at South Korean broadcaster SBS’ annual “Gayo Daejun” event. According to Billboard, Wendy was rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with fractures in her pelvis and wrist and injuries to her face.
Since their debut in 2014, Red Velvet has released many hits including “Happiness,” “Moonlight Melody,” and “You Better Know.”
