‘South Park: Post COVID’ Gets Thanksgiving 2021 Premiere Date
KEY POINTS
- “South Park: Post COVID” is coming to Paramount+ on Thanksgiving Day
- A second movie is set for release sometime in December
- Fourteen “South Park” movies will be released through 2027
ViacomCBS has set a premiere date for the first “South Park” film that is coming out this year.
“South Park: Post COVID” is premiering exclusively on the streaming platform Paramount+ on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, Deadline reported Wednesday.
“Post COVID” is the first of two upcoming films from the satirical animated franchise. The second film reportedly will premiere sometime in December.
While details on the second film are scarce, “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker has dished a thing or two about the first film that is coming out next month. As its title suggests, “Post COVID” will envision what life would be like once the pandemic is over.
“It’s the boys dealing with a post-COVID world. They’re just trying to get back to normal. So, it is like our show. We’re just trying to get back to normal,” Parker exclusively told The Hollywood Reporter this week.
The upcoming pandemic-themed movie isn’t the only content from “South Park” that touched on the coronavirus. The long-running comedy series released two specials last year dealing with the same subject, “South Park: Pandemic Special” and “South ParQ Vaccination Special.”
Interestingly, the two films that are coming out in the coming months are part of a much bigger project that Parker and co-creator Matt Stone signed with ViacomCBS over the summer.
THR learned that the pair managed to secure a $900 million agreement with the mass media company to produce a total of 14 movies for the streaming service. They will be released in pairs in the next several years.
“With Viacom, we realized we could make them as long or as short as we needed,” Parker said. “And they then went and called them movies. They are the ones who said we are giving them 14 movies in seven years.”
In addition to the movie deal that will run from this year until 2027, the animated series has also been renewed on Comedy Central through 2027, to the delight of many fans.
Technically speaking, the show has not been on air for almost two years now. Season 23 wrapped up in December 2019, and only the two specials —“Pandemic Special” released in September 2020 and “Vaccination Special” released in March — kept fans entertained in the show’s absence, as per TV Line.
