California -- Gas prices in Southern California hit another record-high Sunday, making it the ninth consecutive day the price of regular gasoline broke the record.

The average price in Southern California is now 51.1 cents higher than May 3 and $2.112 more than July 3, 2021, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Last week, a Chevron station in downtown Los Angeles was charging $8.05 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, which was $1.86 more than the statewide average at the time.

In Orange County, the average price of gas rose 2.4 cents, settling at $6.33 per gallon Sunday. Gasoline prices in the county increased 19.6 cents over the past week and 54.6 cents in the past month.

In Riverside County, the average price of gasoline rose to $6.203 per gallon Sunday. It was also the ninth consecutive day that the gas prices in the country hit a record high.

As of Sunday, the statewide average price of gasoline was $6.326 per gallon for regular unleaded, $6.501 for mid-grade fuel, $6.640 for premium gas and $6.853 for diesel. In comparison, the national average as of Sunday was $4.848 for regular gas, $5.196 for mid-grade fuel, $5.487 for premium gasoline and $5.636 for diesel, according to estimates from the Automobile Association of America (AAA).

A number of factors account for the price of gas, including components of gasoline, production costs, distribution costs, overhead costs, distribution and sales and tax and carbon offset feed in California. The rising prices are also influenced by a rare combination of the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia, which is one of the top producers of oil in the world, has faced numerous sanctions amid the war, including a ban on imports of Russian oil and blocking insurers from covering Russian cargoes and tankers carrying Russian oil.
