S&P 500 falls one percent, energy sector weighs
Stocks extended losses on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 off more than 1 percent, weighed down by the energy sector <.GSPE> as crude oil futures slid 2 percent.
Earlier, data showed U.S. consumer confidence fell more than expected in July.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 89.18 points, or 0.98 percent, to 9,019.33. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 10.70 points, or 1.09 percent, to 971.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 16.71 points, or 0.85 percent, to 1,951.18.
