'Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition' PS5 Storage Consumption Revealed

With the announcement of the PlayStation 5’s release date and pricing, one of the things to consider now is how much space the games will take up in the console.

According to the PlayStation website, “Demon’s Souls” will require a “minimum” of 66gb SSD space while fellow launch title “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” will require 50gb.

If that’s not enough to interest you, consider the “Ultimate Edition” of “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” that will include a PlayStation 5 remaster of the popular “Marvel’s Spider-Man” from 2018 starring Peter Parker. That will take up a significant 105gb of memory space according to Video Games Chronicle.

If then you choose to purchase the “Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition” and “Demon’s Souls” at launch, you immediately have 171gb or 20 percent of the PS5’s SSD space inhabited that early in the console’s life.

If you think that if you get the standard edition of the PlayStation 5 with the disc drive that you’ll have an advantage over the Digital Edition, think again. Similar to the PS4, disc versions of PS5 games will be required to have their data transferred onto the console, this time to take advantage of the significant speed of the PlayStation 5’s SSD (5.5gb/s raw).

Still, Sony has said that the PS5 will offer more flexibility for players on how they manage console storage as users will be able to configure installations and chose to install just a game’s multiplayer campaign. Once the single-player campaign is completed, they can choose to delete it.

And although PS5 owners will be able to expand their internal storage courtesy of Sony-certified off the shelf SSDs, expect those drives capable of the PlayStation 5’s huge bandwidth to be priced high in the short term.

Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter explains it this way: “In the short term at least, the advice is simple: don’t buy an NVMe drive without Sony validation if you plan to use it in PlayStation 5. Also remember that extreme bandwidth PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives are likely to be very expensive – in the short term, at least.

“This is cutting-edge technology, after all. Obviously though, the outlook should improve significantly as the next generation progresses – and prices do tend to drop significantly over time,” Leadbetter says.

With reports of possible low availability of the PlayStation 5 for pre-order, PlayStation president Jim Ryan says Sony is doing its best to predict demand for the PS5’s Digital Edition console.
