Spotify Testing New Feature That Lets Android Users Import Music
Spotify has been focused on bringing a better experience to its Premium and free users, and now it looks like the company is testing out some new features for its platform. It’s been discovered recently that Spotify is testing a new feature on Android devices that will let users import their music library.
The new feature was discovered last week by Jane Manchun Wong, who shared screenshots on her Twitter page. Wong was able to reverse engineer the Android version of the Spotify app to uncover the unreleased feature. The screenshots showed a new “Import” option within the settings menu that is also accompanied by the description: “Add your own music from this device.”
When a user taps on the new “Import” option, a new interface pops up and gives the user the option to select the music they may want to import from their phone to the Spotify app. The page is divided into four sections: Folders, Artists, Albums and Songs. If this feature is similar to the desktop version of Spotify, then it could have support for MP3, M4P and MP4 audio file formats, as pointed out by 9To5Google. Adding this feature could make Spotify more of an all-in-one music player and not just a streaming service.
There is already a workaround that will allow users to import their own music library to the Spotify mobile app. However, adding native support for importing music would require less steps and would be a lot more convenient for users. Since this new feature appears to be only in its testing phase, it’s likely that it could take weeks or even months before it’s rolled out to all users.
That being said, there’s no guarantee that Spotify will make this new feature available for everyone. Even if the company decides to make it available to Android users, it’s very unlikely that iPhone users would get the same treatment, according to Engadget.
In addition to finding the new import feature on Spotify, Wong also discovered a new “saved for later” feature for podcast episodes and a refined user interface for viewing Podcast episodes with their descriptions. She also discovered that Spotify is working on a redesigned Library view that features separate tabs for Playlists, Artists, Albums and Podcasts at the top of the screen. Lastly, Spotify also appears to be testing a feature that automatically turns the user’s Favorite songs into a single playlist.
