Spring Break Shootings: Miami Beach Apply Curfew In Attempt To Restrain Violence
Miami Beach officials are implementing a late-night weekend curfew in response to increasing levels of violence during spring break, including shootings and unruly behavior.
City officials have declared a state of emergency in an attempt to restrain recent shootings that took place during spring break. Five people were injured in two separate shootings on Miami Beach's Ocean Drive over the weekend, and four officers also sustained injuries, CNN reported.
“This isn’t your father’s, your mother’s spring break,” Mayor Dan Gelber said, as reported by The New York Times. “This is something totally different. We don’t ask for spring break, we don’t promote it, we don’t encourage it, we just endure it, and frankly it’s something we don’t want to endure.”
According to NBC Miami, the curfew will be enacted Thursday at 12:01 a.m. and will proceed until 6 a.m. Monday. City Manager Alina Hudek said she would request an identical curfew for next weekend, according to CNN.
"Our city is past its endpoint," Gelber said. “We can’t endure this anymore, we just simply can’t.”
A special commission meeting organized by officials will take place today to further review the state of emergency.
