A New York girl who was allegedly abducted by her father Wednesday afternoon was found unharmed the same day. Authorities said her dad was charged in a separate incident.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) initially said the 7-year-old girl was abducted from Grand Avenue around 2:15 a.m. ET but an Amber Alert issued for her was canceled after she was found "safe and sound" just before 4 p.m. ET, QNS reported.
A police spokesperson told NBC New York that the girl was with her grandmother when she was found.
Police said her father, Jean Puello, 40, wanted to have sex with his ex-girlfriend, the child's mother. The latter refused, which caused Puello to become violent, according to ABC 7 New York. Puello was accused of twisting her wrist, taking out a knife, attempting to put it on her throat and threatening to kill her.
The woman, 29, managed to escape from Puello and take shelter in the apartment building's laundry room, from where she called the police. Meanwhile, Puello grabbed the couple's elder daughter and drove off.
Puello was arrested by deputies and charged with attempted rape and menacing with the child's mother. He is currently not facing any kidnapping charges in connection with his daughter's disappearance because he is legally allowed to keep the child under his care, police told NBC New York. The couple's younger daughter, who is 10 months old, was unharmed during the scuffle, QNS reported.
In June, an Amber Alert was issued for an 11-year-old California boy but it was cancelled after the child was found unharmed. His father, Walter Lara, 38, was accused of stabbing his mother at a parking lot and making off with him. the Modesto Police Department had described Lara as "armed and dangerous."
