The sales of white slip-on shoes from Vans have skyrocketed by 7,800% as more people try to recreate the matching uniforms worn by players in the hit Korean thriller, “Squid Game.”
Costumes inspired by the Netflix series have begun trending online in time for Halloween. Vans saw a 7,800% spike in the sale of their white slip-on since the show aired, according to data from Sole Supplier.
The term “white slip-on” has also seen a 97% increase in search volume on the internet, according to Lyst Insights.
The show’s popularity also led to a 62% spike in search volume for red boiler suits, which would replicate the uniforms worn by the game’s masked guards, according to Variety.
The dystopian series, which spans nine episodes in total, follows 456 debt-ridden people who have been brought to an island where they compete in six games for a chance to win a cash prize worth $38 million.
The games the players are forced to play revolve around those often played by children. Players who fail to clear each stage are killed where they stand.
Despite the gore, “Squid Game” became one of the most-watched shows in the United States and in 89 other countries on Netflix. It’s also slated to become the most-watched show in the streaming platform’s history and could top the current most-watched show, which is Shona Rhimes’ period piece “Bridgerton.”
“It’s only been out for nine days, and it’s a very good chance it’s going to be our biggest show ever,” Ted Sarandos, a co-chief executive at Netflix, said.
The Korean-language survival series could also follow in the footsteps of “Parasite,” a hit South Korean movie directed by Bong Joon-hu, as it is now eligible for a Primetime Emmy nomination. However, the makers of the series would have to choose between the Primetime Emmys and International Emmys.
It is unclear whether “Squid Game” would see another season. Netflix has also yet to confirm whether they plan to renew the hit show. However, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk indicated he may focus on Front Man In-ho should Netflix commission a second season.
“'While I was writing season one, I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I get to do one — one would be the story of the Front Man…,” he said during an interview with The Times.
