'Squid Game' Creator Working On A 'More Violent' Movie Called 'Killing Old People Club'
"Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed he's working on a new film that is "more violent" than the children's game-inspired 2021 Netflix blockbuster.
Hwang said during a session at MipTV that he is developing "Killing Old People Club," a new movie inspired by a novel written by Italian literary giant Umberto Eco. The creator also disclosed that he has already written a 25-page story idea about the project, which he said will surely be "another controversial film," Variety reported.
"It will be more violent than 'Squid Game,'" Hwang described the film, whose working title is "K.O. Club." The 50-year-old South Korean director then joked that he might have to hide from the elderly population once the film comes out.
Violence plagues the 12-episode "Squid Game" as cash-strapped characters compete in a series of games, with losers mercilessly killed by masked guards. The show ranked No. 1 upon its release in September 2021 and reached a record-breaking 1.65 billion hours of viewership in the first four weeks since it came out.
Hwang will soon return home to write the second season of "Squid Game," which he hopes will be available on Netflix by the end of 2024. He previously told the Associated Press that there has been "so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season." "So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!" he added.
Aside from the massive viewership, Hwang said the biggest compliment he has received about the show came from Steven Spielberg, whom he met during the American Film Institute Awards Luncheon in March. "Steven Spielberg told me 'I watched your whole show in three days and now I want to steal your brain!'" Hwang recalled, as per Variety. "It was like the biggest compliment I ever got in my life because he's my film hero. I grew up watching his movies."
The prolific director started writing "Squid Game" in 2009. However, he kept it on his hard drive for a decade before showing the script to his producer, who told him, "Yeah, you have to make it in the States, like, in a foreign country, not in Korea, because it's more like a global show."
They pitched the idea to Netflix, which picked up the series that immediately made headlines across the world. The series paved the way for the first Asians to win Screen Actors Guild trophies after its cast members won major awards at the ceremony held in February.
