It is definitely the year of "Squid Game" as the Netflix’s biggest hit has now received three nominations for the 2022 Golden Globe Awards, after scoring a trophy at the Gotham Awards last month.
The hit dystopian Korean mini-series received nominations for Best Television Series, Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series and Best Supporting Actor awards.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) made the announcement Monday in a live ceremony hosted by HFPA President Helen Hoehne and rapper Snoop Dogg at Goldenglobes.com and on the Golden Globes Youtube channel.
The HFPA also announced the nominees for the annual Golden Globe Awards.
For Best Television series award, “Squid Game” is competing against “Lupin,” “The Morning Show,” “Pose,” and “Succession.”
In the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series award category, Lee Jung-Jae is competing against Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong for “Succession,” Billy Porter for “Pose,” and Omar Sy for “Lupin.”
For the Best Supporting Actor trophy, O Yeong-Su is nominated alongside Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass for “The Morning Show,” Kieran Culkin in “Succession,” and Brett Goldstein in “Ted Lasso.”
Last month, "Squid Game" received the Breakthrough Series – Long Format award at the 31st Annual Gotham Awards.
This year’s Golden Globes Awards were mired in controversy over lack of diversity and poor ethical practices that led NBC to cancel the telecast in 2022. Several other top studios and stars pledged not to work with the HFPA until reforms are instituted in the group.
Among the concerns thrown against the HFPA include not having any Black member in its nearly 100-person organization. The group was also accused of accepting expensive gifts to influence votes for the awards and other unethical behavior. Since then, the HFPA has banned gifts and restricted paid travel in its foundation. It has also diversified its ranks and revamped its by-laws.
“For the past eight months, we have worked tirelessly as an organization to be better,” Hoehne was quoted as saying by Variety. “We also have 21 new members. The largest and most diverse in our 79-year-old history. Not only have they brought in a fresh perspective, but ideas that will help us continue to evolve.”
This year, several Neflix shows have scored the nods, including Jane Camption for “The Power of the Dog” for Best Director for Motion Picture, Jennifer Lawrence for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical Comedy for “Don’t Look Up,” and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy.
Aside from lacking a telecast partner, the HFPA has kept mum over other details of the awarding ceremony for the 79th Golden Globes which will be held on Jan. 9, 2022. Variety also reported that January's Golden Globes will focus on the group’s philanthropic efforts and the changes made within it.
