'Squid Game' Phone Number Belongs To Korean Man, Gets Thousands Of Calls Daily
The phone number shown on Netflix's hit series, "Squid Game" turns out to be real and owned by a Korean man whose life changed drastically as the show became a hit. The man, who has not watched the show, says he gets up to 4000 calls every day.
In the Korean series, a mysterious man gives another man his business card and tells him to call the number on the card if he wants to play a game and win a cash prize.
After the show made it to the No. 1 spot on Netflix, the real-life owner of the phone number is saying he can't live a normal life due to the thousands of calls he receives.
The 40-year-old man from Gyeonggi Province told MBC that he wasn't even aware of the series when he started receiving the calls. However, one of the callers informed him that he got his number from the popular series on Netflix.
The man said that he gets dozens of calls from kids who say they want to be a part of the game, as seen in the series. Apart from calls, the man also receives photos and text messages on his number. Although the ordeal has caused him sleepless nights, he says he can not change his number as it has been his number for 10 years and is connected to his business.
According to multiple local outlets, Netflix is currently in negotiation with the owner of the number to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, South Korean Politician Huh Kyung-young took to Facebook on Sept. 26 to offer the man $85,000 in exchange for his number.
Since the series premiered on Netflix, it became an instant hit. Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Deadline Monday, "Squid Game will definitely be our biggest non-English-language show in the world, for sure."
"It’s only been out for nine days, and it’s a very good chance it’s going to be our biggest show ever," Sarandos noted. The show is currently ranking among other Netflix's popular content including "Ginny and Georgia," "Who Killed Sara?," "Bridgerton" and "Shadow and Bone."
Earlier this month, the director of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that there are no plans for a sequel as of now, but said that when the show does return, there will be an entirely new cast.
