St. Louis Cardinals Can't Get Back On Field Because Of Coronavirus Outbreak
The St. Louis Cardinals still can’t get back on the field because of a coronavirus outbreak in their clubhouse. The team was supposed to play its first game in nine days Friday night, but St. Louis’ contest with the Chicago Cubs has been postponed because of another positive test.
A weekend series with the Milwaukee Brewers and a four-game set against the Detroit Tigers from July 31 to Aug. 6 has already been postponed because seven Cardinals’ players and six staff members tested positive for the coronavirus. It’s not yet known if St. Louis and Chicago will start their series Saturday.
The news comes fewer than 24 hours after Major League Baseball announced a revised schedule for the Cardinals. Prior to Friday’s positive test, St. Louis was set to play 55 games, including five seven-inning doubleheaders, over the final 52 days of the regular season.
With a 2-3 record, the Cardinals have played the fewest games of any MLB team. Even the Miami Marlins, who missed a week’s worth of games because more than half of its roster tested positive for the coronavirus, have played seven games.
Five major-league teams have played as many as 14 games. MLB is still hoping every team can complete a 60-game schedule.
The Cardinals are in third place in the NL Central, which is led by the Cubs. Chicago and St. Louis both have three losses, but the Cubs have seven more victories than their division rivals.
St. Louis last played a game on July 29 when they were defeated by the Minnesota Twins. The Cardinals have not won a game since July 25.
