A St. Louis police officer, who was shot in the head while responding to a shooting call in the Tower Grove South neighborhood Saturday, has succumbed to injuries.
The officer, identified as 29-year-old Tamarris Bohannon, was rushed to SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital where he was listed in "grave" condition. Another officer was also shot in the leg.
The police department announced the news of his demise Sunday night.
"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we report that our critically injured officer has died. We cannot express how much we appreciate the hospital staff who continuously treated both officers for their injuries. Thank you all for your continued thoughts & prayers!" the police department tweeted.
Meanwhile, the gunman, who had barricaded himself in a home after shooting the officers, was taken into custody following a 12-hour standoff. No one else was injured in the incident.
"These officers, all they're trying to do is their job and try to help a person who's wounded and they come under fire themselves," St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden told reporters outside the hospital.
Bohannon had been with the department for three-and-a-half years and is survived by his wife and three children who are below the age of 10.
In a statement, Sen. Roy Blunt paid tribute to the officer saying, "Officer Bohannon rushed to the scene of a dangerous situation to protect innocent lives. He demonstrated the courage and selflessness that make law enforcement officers truly exceptional. In the wake of this tragedy, we are once again reminded of the sacrifices law enforcement officers and their families make every day. They deserve our unwavering support and eternal gratitude for their service."
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson too took to Facebook to offer condolences.
"Our brave law enforcement officers across Missouri protect us every day without hesitation and they and their families deserve our support," Parson said.
Meanwhile, the unidentified gunman is yet to be formally charged.
