St. Patrick’s Day Movies On Netflix: Watch 7 Films With Irish Characters
St. Patrick’s Day is best celebrated from home this year, so why not watch movies with Irish characters? These movies are streaming on Netflix, and they all follow characters with Irish heritage. Some are following Irish-Americans while others come straight from Ireland. All are great for St. Paddy's Day viewing material.
“The Irishman” (2019) Obviously. Martin Scorsese’s three-hour, Oscar-nominated mob movie will definitely take up a good chunk of your night on St. Patrick's Day. The Netflix original film follows Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (Robert De Niro) as he recalls his time as a hitman in 1950s Philadelphia.
“Miss Julie” (2014) This period drama stars Irish actor Colin Farrell as a valet in 1890 in County Fermanagh, in the Kingdom of Ireland. He falls in love with the mistress of the house, Miss Julie (Jessica Chastain), but their affair takes a dark turn. The independent film is an adaptation of the August Strindberg play.
“Cardboard Gangsters” (2017) This Irish indie film follows 24-year-old Jay Connolly as he and his friends try to take over the local drug trade. That’s not as easy as he thinks it sounds.
“Hostage to the Devil” (2016) Viewers who prefer creepier St. Patrick’s Day fare might be interested in this documentary about an excorcist. Father Malachi Martin was an Irish Jesuit who was supposedly fighting the devil during the late ‘70s. First-hand witnesses recall what happened.
“P.S. I Love You” (2007) This movie follows a grieving American widow (Hilary Swank) whose dead husband (Gerard Butler) sends her on a trip to Ireland, his home country. She meets another Irishman (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and sparks fly.
“The Lobster” (2015) Famous Castleknock, Ireland native Colin Farrell also stars in this oddball indie film. Everyone has to partner up romantically within 45 days. If they don’t fall in love, they’ll be turned into animals.
"The Siege of Jadotville" (2016) This Netflix original, which is based on a true story, follows Irish soldiers on a U.N. peacekeeping mission to the Congo. Irish actor Jamie Dornan stars.
