Stacey Abrams Makes It Official, Georgia Democrat Announces Run For Governor
Ending months of speculation, Democrat Stacey Abrams announced on Wednesday that she is running for governor of Georgia. Should she win the party's nomination, Abrams would likely have a rematch with Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
I’m running for Governor because opportunity in our state shouldn’t be determined by zip code, background or access to power. #gapol

Abrams is a frontrunner for the nomination. There are about three Democrats who are believed to be interested in running: John Barrow, Van Johnson and Mike Thurmond.
While Kemp is considered the Republican frontrunner, he faces a primary challenge from Vernon Jones, who has been endorsed by Michael Flynn and Rudy Giuliani. Former Sen. David Perdue has also expressed some interest in running.
Abrams, 47, a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives, has been a champion for voting rights. She started Fair Fight Action, which addresses voter registration issues.
In 2018, Kemp defeated Abrams under allegations of voter suppression.
Abrams also led the charge in Georgia to help it become a swing state, leading to Joe Biden’s underdog win over Donald Trump in 2020. She also helped Democrats win two U.S. Senate races in 2021.
Abrams was on Biden's short list of potential running mates.
“When someone asks me if that's my ambition, I have a responsibility to say 'yes,' for every young woman, every person of color, every young person of color, who sees me and decides what they're capable of based on what I think I am capable of,” Abrams said in a May interview with CBS News.

Stacey Abrams announces she’s running for governor of Georgia on the same day it looks like the Supreme Court will strike down Roe. Two very different visions of America’s future. Which one will prevail?
