Stan Van Gundy’s estimated net worth is $20 million. He is set to become the New Orleans Pelicans coach next season.
Van Gundy’s hiring as the next Pelicans coach did not come as a surprise. After all, his past experiences with other teams were successful. His track record speaks for itself. What’s more surprising is that it took more than two years before he got a head coaching position again.
Van Gundy is the older brother of former NBA coach turned analyst Jeff Van Gundy. Stan Van Gundy previously coached the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons. He came closest to winning the championship in his first season with the Magic after leading the team to the Eastern Conference title in 2009, a report from Celebrity Net Worth revealed.
At the time, Orlando was led by a young and healthy Dwight Howard, but they lost against Kobe Bryant-led L.A. Lakers in the finals. The Magic-Lakers finals showdown prevented a dream matchup between Bryant and LeBron James when the Cleveland Cavaliers lost to Orlando in the Eastern Finals series.
The 61-year-old coach would move on to Detroit Pistons in 2014, but he couldn’t replicate the success he had in Orlando. During his time with the Magic, the team entered the postseason five times in five seasons while in Detroit, the Pistons could only manage to get a single playoff berth in four years. Overall, SVG tallied a 523-384 win loss record, per Basketball Reference.
The Indio, California native has experience in running a basketball organization after serving as Pistons’ president of basketball operations, on top of being its head coach. The Pelicans are hoping to enter the playoffs under SVG who is known for building defensive teams in his career. According to ESPN, New Orleans should have gained a playoff berth but struggled in the NBA restart. With Zion Williamson as the new face of the franchise, Pelicans fans have something to look forward to next year.
Van Gundy is no stranger in mentoring big, athletic men. In Magic, he transformed Howard into a 2-way player. In Detroit, he helped Andre Drummond become an All-Star several times.
The lineup of Pelicans is composed of veterans and a young core of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Williamson. The team also owns the 13th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Fans were devastated when longtime star Anthony Davis got traded to Los Angeles Lakers, but the Pelicans’ future seemed promising.
On the personal side, Van Gundy is married to Kim Van Gundy. The two have four children together.
