‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ First Reviews: What Are Critics Saying?
While reviews for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” haven’t officially hit the internet, critics who went to Saturday’s premiere in Los Angeles let fans know their thoughts right away. They took to Twitter to share their early reactions to the film.
Generally, everyone seems to love “The Last Jedi,” which was directed by Rian Johnson. All of the Twitter raves are pretty vague, but they’re happy with everything. From the cinematography to the acting to the writing, it seems like “Episode VIII” is striking a cord with these moviegoers.
IGN writer Terri Schwartz raved about the cast. She praised Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver. She was also thrilled with newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.
Erik Davis, an editor at Fandango, called it “absolutely fantastic - gripping, touching, funny and powerful [with] gorgeous shots” while Gizmodo reporter Germain Lussier said it was “crazy, awesome.”
Comicbook.com editor James Viscardi went a step above just raving about the movie on its own. He thinks that this “The Last Jedi” will be ranked above all other “Star Wars” movies.
Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm praised the movie too and noted that there were some emotional moments in “The Last Jedi.” He also had advice that many other critics echoed: don’t read the spoilers. It’s best to be surprised when you see this movie.
Many fans are worried about the film being too similar to “Empire Strikes Back,” but several audience members have said that is not the case. Entertainment Weekly writer Anthony Breznican wrote that the new movie is unlike the other franchise installments.
CinemaBlend editor Eric Eisenberg acknowledged that the movie is flawed, as did Crave critic William Bibbiani. However, neither slammed the movie by any means. Both still seemed to think the movie was great.
Those flaws likely won’t be described until full reviews can come out. Lucasfilm has embargoed journalists from publishing their full reviews until Tuesday at 12 p.m. EST. Until then, fans will have to live with vague tweets. Check out even more reactions from the Los Angeles premiere below:
Decide for yourself if “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is worth the hype when it hits theaters Dec. 15.
