STD App Hula Changing Name After Complaints It’s Insensitive To Hawaiians
The founder of an STD app called Hula will rename it following complaints that the name is culturally insensitive to Hawaiians.
Hula directs users to nearby testing centers for sexually transmitted diseases and lets them privately share testing results with sex partners. The app’s developers at first said it was named Hula because it helps “get you lei’d.” But after some backlash from Native Hawaiians, founder Ramin Bastani told the AP he is going to change the app’s name.
An online petition was created to urge Bastani to take action, but the app founder did not yield to the campaign at first. At this point, Bastani says he has not decided on a new name.
