Stephen Curry is likely about to make history at the world’s most famous arena. The NBA star can set the all-time record for 3-pointers made when the Golden State Warriors play the New York Knicks Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Curry has made 2,972 career 3-pointers, just one behind Ray Allen’s record of 2,973. The Warriors’ star is averaging 5.4 3s per game in the 2021-2022 season, putting him on track to reach the No. 1 spot in Golden State’s upcoming game.

“I’m enjoying the moment and now you’re knocking on the doorstep. It’s pretty surreal,” Curry said, via ESPN, after Golden State’s 102-100 victory over the Indiana Pacers Monday. “But just trying to let it happen. It’s one thing I’ve learned these last three games, is keep playing basketball, keep taking shots you think you'll make and enjoy the experience of it because it’s a long time coming.”

Curry went 5 for 15 from distance in Indiana and has struggled shooting the ball with the record in sight. A 40.1% 3-point shooter this season, Curry has only made 30.4% of his shots from behind the arc in the last three games.

“I think he's been trying a little bit too hard the last few games,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “Just trying to make 3s and get to this record, it will be a relief for him I think, and for our team, when he does break it.”

It’s hard to imagine that Curry won’t surpass Allen on Tuesday. The two-time MVP has made more than two 3-pointers in 10 straight games. Curry has hit two 3-pointers or fewer in just two of his 26 games this season.

For his career, Curry has averaged 3.8 made 3s in 788 games. Allen played 1,300 NBA games.

The Knicks allow teams to shoot 37.4 3-pointers per game, and opponents are making an average of 13.4 3s. Only six teams surrender more shots from behind the arc than New York.

Like many superstars, Curry often shines under the bright lights at MSG. Curry dropped 37 points on 7-for-14 shooting from 3-point range when the Warriors visited the Knicks last season. When Curry was on the cusp of superstardom in 2013, he scored 54 points on 11-for-13 shooting from 3-point range at the Garden.

Considered the greatest shooter in NBA history for several years, Curry owns the single-season record with 402 3-pointers made.

On pace to shatter his own single-season record, Curry is a heavy favorite to win the 2022 NBA MVP award.
