‘Steven Universe: Save The Light’ 8 Playable Characters, Gameplay, PS4 Release Revealed At PAX East
Cartoon Network Games attended PAX East this Saturday and dropped the big news about the new “Steven Universe” game. Previously, the publisher collaborated with Grumpyface Studios for a tactical mobile PRG, entitled “Steven Universe: Attack the Light.” This year, the two companies are working together again to release a new game based on the famous animated series.
Entitled “Steven Universe: Save the Light,” the new game will not be for mobile gaming, but will instead release on consoles. So far the only platform that’s confirmed to be supported by the game at launch is the PS4, with Sony already announcing the game on its PlayStation blog. There isn’t a fixed release date for the game yet, but Cartoon Network Games & Digital Products VP Chris Waldron already assured fans that it is coming to the PS4 platform this year.
At PAX East, the developer said that the new game is designed for consoles, without expanding on which consoles they are. However, many fans have since assumed that the role-playing game is coming to the Xbox One and even to the Nintendo Switch. Since this isn’t a mobile game, fans shouldn’t expect for it to be available on the Nintendo 3DS.
Cartoon Network Games has also teased the gameplay of “Steven Universe: Save the Light” at the gaming festival. In a video it presented at the event, series creator Rebecca Sugar talks about the new “Steven” game. The takeaway from Sugar’s statements in the clip is the inclusion of eight playable characters in this game. As for the gameplay footage, it shows Steven, Greg Universe, Connie and Amethyst battling monsters in a manner that resembles the mechanics in the original game. It also confirms previous speculations that Steven will have a more important role in the battles.
Speaking more of the game, Waldron stated, “It’s a unique RPG that combines elements of real-time and turn-based combat. Players can customize their party using many of the characters from the show as they play through an original story co-written by the aforementioned Rebecca Sugar.” Grumpyface’s Chris Graham added that fans can expect “bigger, deeper and more epic adventures designed for consoles” with this new title.
It appears that “Steven the Universe: Save the Light” will not have a connection with the first game as well. Graham explained, “‘Save the Light’ has been designed to serve as an entry-point for players unfamiliar with Steven Universe, while also giving super-fans new surprises and insights into the show’s captivating world and lore.”
The official description of “Steven Universe: Save the Light” reads: “When a mysterious warrior arrives in Beach City and steals a powerful weapon, it’s up to the Crystal Gems to embark on the magical mission to end all magical missions. Steven and the Gems must travel far beyond Beach City, battle an army of creepy creatures, and stop a no-good Prism-snatcher in order to Save the Light!”
